My most used app is definitely my notes app. I’d be lost without it. 2,239 notes in… There’s literally everything in there, including a pinned note called “ideas”, where I add snippets of ideas and concepts I stumble upon that I find interesting. Things that make me stop and think. Here’s a collection of 10 random ones, most of them unrelated to each other, without extra fluff - straight from my notes app to your screen. Hopefully you’ll find something that inspires you to research further. 💫
“David Deutsch’s Principle of Optimism states that all evils are caused by insufficient knowledge.”
Human progress depends on the creation of knowledge. We derive our knowledge not only from sensory experiences, but from the quest for critical thought, conjecture and good explanations. There is no necessary limitation to human progress and the creation of knowledge. This boundlessness of the creation of knowledge is the “beginning of infinity” that makes humans significant in the cosmic scheme of things." — The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch

An Idea Lab “is an intellectual culture where high-rung thinking thrives and where it can be done well communally.” In an Idea Lab, the goal is to get to the truth, and debate, disagreement, and idea sharpening are welcome. An Echo Chamber is what it sounds like. In an Echo Chamber, “praising the object becomes a very cool thing to do, while saying anything bad about the object is considered an act of unredeemable blasphemy.” — Not Boring newsletter

Conditions for emergence: The specific circumstances or factors that must be in place for something new or different to come into being. For example, think of making the perfect soup. You've got your ingredients ready: vegetables, broth, spices, and so on. You throw everything into the pot. At first, it's just a pot of water with stuff in it. But as it cooks, the flavors meld, the vegetables soften, and you eventually get your nice soup. The heat, time, and combination of ingredients are the conditions for its emergence. What are the conditions for the emergence of your goals / a good night’s sleep / a good relationship / creativity / motivation / etc?

Similarly: “The most sophisticated people I know--inside they're all children. We never really loose a certain sense we had when we were kids.” - Jim Henson

In his memoir, C.S. Lewis describes joy as "an unsatisfied desire which is itself more desirable than any other satisfaction." He distinguishes it from concepts like happiness and pleasure, and compares it instead to "a particular kind of unhappiness or grief, but it is a kind we want." (source)

^ similar to the idea of being intentional about serendipity - putting yourself in new situations where you are likely to meet people and where you don’t have a clear overview of the outcome, making it likely for good things to happen by chance

The idea that almost every good book you’ve ever read shares most of these 15 key story moments, or “beats”, almost always at the same percentage of the book. Jessica Brody wrote a book about how to write a novel based on these points. When she dissected dozens of popular books, she found that they shared most of these common moments, even unintentionally- they just seem to be naturally embedded into stories that are good.
