Lots of food for thought in here, thank you for sharing! I would love to know (maybe in another post) some tangible things you did to switch from cynicism to optimism. I tend to get stuck in pessimistic moods and seem to have to work hard to look at the world a little brighter !

Thank you Katie! I might write about it but it would be for my paid subscribers bc it’s such a vulnerable story! I would love to share more though. Thank you for reading 💙💙

I loved reading this article. I have always been more optimistic than pessimistic. Like your friend, I have experienced some hard knocks and tragedies. Whilst I may have battled my way through them eventually, I still choose to have dreams and expectations. Cynicism grinds you down and can be a close cousin to bitterness - bit good for our emotional and physical health.

absolutely. very close to bitterness, and it's easier to see how that one's destructive in the long term, in possibly every way. happy you liked it ☺️

I have a similar attitude, depressed as a child/teen I became a super reader. Yet as a C student (undiagnosed math dyslexia)I began to draw trees see nature and my place in it. Life is, I agree half and half and it constantly changes. Optimism is realilistic.

I feel like I was an optimist for most of my life without even really having to think about it. But the older I get and the more I experience, I keep having these moments of wanting to close off my heart and assume the worst and not have any expectations for good. And sometimes I’m so close to giving into it. But like you said here, it sounds so miserable to pre-emptively numb yourself to everything to make sure you never get hurt again by anything. Anyways, I really love this piece and thank you for sharing.

I loved this so much as an optimist. I think one of the smartest things person can do is become an optimist and a lesson that I think alot of us should learn is that, it's okay to let ourselves have high expectations, whilst also being able to accept the fact that reality doesn't always meet our expectations.

Not letting ourselves expect anything to "avoid disappointment" is just preventing us from learning that.

Thank you for writing this! The theme of this article has been on my mind a lot recently. Cynicism is the destroyer of progress. Optimism is the enabler of progress.

interesting and lovely

read. Curious as to what shifted your attitude from being a pessimist to become more optimistic? Did something happen in your life or did you just change your perspective overtime
