Somewhere out in the internet void I once read a quote that went something like "we want AI to do our chores so we can be creative, not for AI to be creative so we can do our chores" and that idea immediately popped into my mind with your article. Great read!

I've read the same and everytime I see this quote again I long abt how AI could've been used for so many good things around the world. If it was better developped for that purpose, it could clean our oceans, plant and harvest our food, build buildings and care for our forests. We shouldn't have to work for basic human needs anymore, not a single person on earth would have to starve or be in life danger because of a lack of basic needs.

Resonate with this so much, especially "It's getting everyone used to cutting corners when it comes to creative thinking." I was reading an article the other day about how 90% of college students in a survey shared that they were using AI on their coursework. I'm not anti-AI either, but like you it makes me a little nervous for the future of critical and creative thinking. While searching for the right words and structure may be harder than having an AI just do it for you, I think it's an important step in developing our ability to understand and express ideas. As you said, people want to "check the box", to have the outcome or end product as efficiently as possible. It's like wanting to be an author, without wanting to or enjoying writing. But isn't that the point? Shouldn't you want to enjoy the journey instead of just taking pictures of the scenery at the end?

Thank you for this! It's ironic that in a time when everyone wants to be different, a huge lot of them don't mind sounding the same 😅 Also, when you mentioned about novels, movie scripts being written by AI... it's kind of sad to think that while real and unique voices may stand out, because it's faster to churn out AI-generated work, they'll probably get more opportunities if publishers/producers etc are more focused on profit 😕

I don't disagree, but this statement below certainly won't help. 😬

"The only thing that's going to matter is going to be the objective quality of a piece of writing. I think in 10 to 15 years that is the only thing that'll matter. Just as when I walk into a club or some bar and I hear the song, I don't care how it was made. I don't care who made it. All I care about is that the song is a vibe. I think it's going to be the same thing with writing. I don't care if AI wrote it for you. I don't care if AI wrote it with you. I don't care if you wrote it by yourself."

I was literally having a conversation with my boyfriend the other day about how AI is a great tool to *assist* in ideas generation of being a building block, more so in STEM based areas but AI in creative areas needs to be treated with caution, especially in such a consumerist age. All about product quantity over quality. My favourite part about reading/watching/listening to any art is the artists voice. No matter how hard they might try to vary you can always catch their voice and I think that's so important for human connection. This is why I'm loving Substack.

Exactly same!! The artist's voice is the most important and memorable thing and we're losing that with AI In creative spaces

Haven't finished it yet, but I've been reading a study that found that using AI for writing suggestions caused non-American participants to adopt more Western writing styles. So using AI can influence the artist's voice to the point where it's diminishing the nuances of cultural expression that comes out in our writing. Like you said, Keely, I think AI in creative areas need to be treated with caution - I don't think we even have the full picture yet of how using AI affects how we think.

Loved it! I just can't imagine a world with AI-generated books and, even on substack, come on ppl, why use AI on a writing platform??

But also did anyone think how we used to work without AI? Even when the work was hard we didn’t have a choice to think about AI and how it will be easier for us

Great article! I recently read an essay which was about the thought, that nothing seemed to be original anymore, especially online. While the algorythm is one factor, I believe that AI it making it more worse. In theory, if you were to make a creative campaign nowdays, you would be way ahead in comparison to others.

I love this quote. I legit feel like people using AI for creative fields are people who don't really give a fuck abt what they're doing. If they don't care abt their own work, why should I??
