In my longtime career of being an artist there have been many points of what others would call 'success'. The first show in a gallery, the first solo show, the first sale... All were steps along the way.
Money - and what it buys never equaled success, it simply meant other and more available choices.
There were two salient points in that career. The first was realizing that my work had stopped being autobiographical and became reflective of the world around. The second was when a Midwestern university collected my life work - there is perhaps no greater achievement than immortality before death.
Being loved, finding friendship and realizing fulfillment in your work is success.
I resonated with this piece so much! Especially the part about you have to define what success means to you. It took me starting a PhD in the sciences only to discover I actually loathed the nitty gritty components of that career/lifestyle. I quit the degree and now I’m in a much less ‘glamorous’ career according to society, but I love the freedom outside the job that I have to pursue my creative passions. Thanks again for sharing 😊
I think ill be buying your book because I just today wrote about the insane stress and indecisiveness I've been going through regarding my career choices. This has to be a sign I don't care. Hope your book fixes my life for me 🔥🔥
My ambition/idea of success was always "be happy", which is not very focussed, but seemed to go along with an willingness to walk through open doors (when I recognised them as such). In my mid-thirties I became a teacher, which is not the way to financial success, but job satisfaction is through the roof. As I now approach retirement, I can see that success for me has been being able to love what I do rather than accruing assets, but the middle ground would certainly be a combination of both!
Erifili, it's inspiring to see how you've aligned your career and life choices with what truly fulfills you. Looking forward to reading your book and learning from your journey! 💙🧿
Erifiki, so many of your points have spoken to me, I mean freedom is everything and more to me and it’s such responsibility to be aware of that! All the best to you in your search for self (I just turned 25 myself and it’s been well.. chaotic as ever haha)🌟
It's true, having these things defined. Where you want to go, how you're going to get there and who you're taking with you are pretty much everything.
How can a person ever feel like they're doing something worth doing if they having first establish what is important to them.
I know a few people like that and am sort of in that place too. With a murky idea of what success looks like.
You can only figuring it out by digging deep, being honest with yourself and experimenting.
Great read.
